| Installing The Guardian Alert™ Hitch System |
| Insert the metal hitch body into the existing 1 1/4 inch receiver on
the rear of the vehicle. run the cables out the rear of the hitch
receiver toward the front of the vehicle and proceed to step one. |
Step 1 |
Slip the Guardian Alert sensor into the receiver hitch until
the pins lock. Ensure Guardian Alert label is right side up. |
Step 2 |
From beneath the rear of the vehicle, connect the 4-pin
connector to the sensor and the 2-wire end of the power
cable to the reverse lamp wires. |
Step 3 |
Feed the 4-foot display cable (part of wiring set #3) along
the rear of the vehicle up into the rear of the passenger
compartment through a body plug or existing cable entry grommet or
around the weather seal on a SUV or van. Coil up and firmly secure
spare cable with provided cable ties. |
Step 4 |
Determine location of Notification Display where it can be
seen and heard. Prepare surface with provided alcohol wipe
and mount indicator using the provided Velcro™ stick pad. |
- Use the cable ties to secure all cables up and away from moving
parts or hot areas. Verify that the connector on the cable set does
not hang to the ground when the sensor is removed for towing.
- Check that cables were not cut or chafed on installation.
- Install the warning label where it will not be damaged.

| Troubleshooting |
| After making any changes to the installation or vehicle wiring,
please return to step 1 and repeat the entire test to ensure
that the unit is working correctly. |
|
| Testing Procedures |
| Please follow all of the testing procedures listed below to ensure that
the unit is operating correctly. |
Step 1 |
Set the parking brake. Turn the ignition switch on and place
the vehicle in reverse. At this time, a green light will appear
from the Interior Indicator to indicate the unit has been properly
activated.
If the green light does not come on when the vehicle is placed in
reverse, check the unit to ensure that it is completely and correctly
installed. It is possible if the green light does not come on that there
is not enough voltage to the unit. Check the battery with a voltage
meter to ensure that there are at least 12 volts going to the system.
Disengage reverse, start the engine and idle for 15 minutes to
recharge the battery if required then repeat at step 1. |
Step 2 |
Using a tape measure, mark off a distance of 18 feet straight
out from behind the vehicle. Ask a person to stand there. The
vehicle should remain stationary while the person begins to walk
toward it from behind. When the person reaches a distance of 9 feet
from the vehicle, the display should indicate a flashing yellow/green
light. When the person reaches a distance of 5 feet from the vehicle,
the display should turn to a flashing red /green light and emit a fast
audible beep. When the person is within a distance of 3 feet of the
vehicle, the display will show a solid red light and the beep should
become continuous, warning the driver that an object is dangerously
close to the vehicle. |
Step 3 |
Now find a parking lot or similar open space where there are
few or no pedestrians and vehicles. Have an assistant check
the area for possible collisions and advise you or the operator when it
is safe to reverse. Test the system reversing towards trash cans, curbs,
lamp posts and walls. |
|
| Sensor Removal For Towing |
Step 1 |
Reach under the receiver hitch and disconnect the plug and
socket. |
Step 2 |
Depress the pins and slide the sensor out of the receiver. |
Step 3 |
Keep the receiver sensor in a safe place within the
vehicle for re-installation as soon as towing is completed. |
|
| Sensor Re-Installation After Towing |
Step 1 |
Depress the pins and slide the sensor into the receiver until
the pins lock. Reach under the receiver hitch and connect
the plug and socket. |
Step 2 |
Test the system to ensure the re-installation is correct. |
