| Installing The Guardian Alert™ Doppler Awareness System |
WHEN WORKING INSIDE OR UNDER ANY VEHICLE INSURE THAT
THE IGNITION IS OFF, TRANSMISSION IN PARK (NEUTRAL FOR
MANUAL SHIFT) AND THE PARKING BRAKE IS ENGAGED.
The sensor wires can be installed through the interior of the vehicle
(on the floor, ceiling or molding) or underneath the vehicle. The corresponding
steps listed below may vary according to the location of
the interior indicator and the desired installation of the wires. |
Step 1 |
From underneath the rear of the vehicle. Find a location inside
the rear bumper skin at the center of the bumper; level with
the bumper crash bar, which is vertical. This may be a curved surface.
Clean the area from dirt and grease with a rag. Attach the sensor
using the 4” x 2” Dual Lock strip. If the surface is curved, cut the
strip into two pieces 4” x 1” and attach the sensor at the top and
bottom of the front face. The red and gray cables come out of the
back of the sensor. The back of the sensor should face the vehicle.
The front of the sensor is placed against the inside of the bumper skin
facing rearward away from the vehicle. Bring the wires into the trunk
or underneath the vehicle towards the reverse lamps using an existing
hole or entrance. |
Step 2 |
Power Wiring: Locate the end of the power wire that contains
two internal wires (one red positive and one black ground).
Remove one of the rear light housings and find the reverse light
power and ground wire. For the best connection, it is recommended
that one (1) inch of insulation be removed and these two wires
soldered to the vehicle reverse light wiring and properly re-insulated.
(There is no need to determine the polarity to correctly connect the
power cord). Tape the connection to ensure insulation and that
nothing comes disconnected. |
Step 3 |
Place the interior display indicator in an area of the vehicle
that is visible to the driver and within his or her range of
hearing. Attach the interior display indicator using the 1” square
Velcro stick pad. Prepare the attachment point and the underside of
the display indicator with the alcohol wipe to remove any polish, dust
etc. |
Step 4 |
Locate the long gray display indicator wire and run it through
or underneath the vehicle until it reaches the wire running
from the interior indicator. Conceal all wires and secure them to the
vehicle in an appropriate place using cable ties of required. |
- Use the cable ties to secure all cables up and away from moving
parts or hot areas. Verify that the connector on the cable set does
not hang to the ground when the sensor is removed for towing.
- Check that cables were not cut or chafed on installation.
- Install the warning label where it will not be damaged.

| Troubleshooting |
| After making any changes to the installation or vehicle wiring,
please return to step 1 and repeat the entire test to ensure
that the unit is working correctly. |
|
| Testing Procedures |
| Please follow all of the testing procedures listed below to ensure that
the unit is operating correctly. |
Step 1 |
Set the parking brake. Turn the ignition switch on and place
the vehicle in reverse. At this time, a green light will appear
from the Interior Indicator to indicate the unit has been properly
activated.
If the green light does not come on when the vehicle is placed in
reverse, check the unit to ensure that it is completely and correctly
installed. It is possible if the green light does not come on that there
is not enough voltage to the unit. Check the battery with a voltage
meter to ensure that there are at least 12 volts going to the system.
Disengage reverse, start the engine and idle for 15 minutes to
recharge the battery if required then repeat at step 1. |
Step 2 |
Using a tape measure, mark off a distance of 18 feet straight
out from behind the vehicle. Ask a person to stand there. The
vehicle should remain stationary while the person begins to walk
toward it from behind. When the person reaches a distance of 9 feet
from the vehicle, the display should indicate a flashing yellow/green
light. When the person reaches a distance of 5 feet from the vehicle,
the display should turn to a flashing red /green light and emit a fast
audible beep. When the person is within a distance of 3 feet of the
vehicle, the display will show a solid red light and the beep should
become continuous, warning the driver that an object is dangerously
close to the vehicle. |
Step 3 |
Now find a parking lot or similar open space where there are
few or no pedestrians and vehicles. Have an assistant check
the area for possible collisions and advise you or the operator when it
is safe to reverse. Test the system reversing towards trash cans, curbs,
lamp posts and walls. |
