I am writing this letter to let you know we are pleased with the performance of the Guardian Alert Backup Warning Systems we purchased from you. It has been more than 18 months since we started using the systems and they're everything you said they would be. Since we equipped our delivery trucks, nationwide the fleet has been "backing accident" free. I was disappointed when I first received two backing accident reports from the field until I discovered that the accidents occurred in rental trucks not equipped with a Guardian Alert. I've got to believe these truck rental companies would be quick to realize their return on investment if they were using your system. I know we've saved a bundle, not to mention the vehicle down time we would have incurred had any of our trucks been tied up in the body shop getting repaired. Thanks again. You've got a great product Sincerely,
![]() GUARDIAN ALERT BACKUP WARNING SYSTEM
Backup accidents are a fact of life. According the Department of Transportation, twenty percent of all motor vehicle accidents are backup crashes, and driver error is cited as the number one cause. Even the most conscientious drivers with excellent driving records fall victim to a vehicle's rear blind spot. To prevent backing accidents, New Jersey American Water Company began having the Guardian Alert Backup Warning System installed on new utility body, vans and pickup trucks in it's fleet. A few operating centers also retrofitted some of their existing fleet. So, what can the Guardian Alert System do for you? It will virtually eliminate any vehicle's rear blind spot, and will enhance driver awareness without altering established driving procedures. The Guardian Alert Backup Warning System uses microwave-radar technology to detect obstacles behind a vehicle. Unlike other backup warning systems, it works in all weather and light conditions. The technology is motion activated and operates on the principle of reflected radio signals. When the system detects reflected energy from a target, a frequency shift occurs which activates the interior indicator in the drivers' compartment. This alerts a driver to obstacles at the rear of the vehicle. The system works at optimal performance levels from complete darkness to glaring sunlight, even when the system is covered in mud, dust, snow, rain, sleet or ice. The Doppler Radar sensor rests in a sealed housing, which is mounted to the rear of the vehicle, as near to the center of the bumper area as possible. It is wired to the vehicles reverse light system, so it becomes active as soon as the vehicle is shifted into reverse. The alarm portion mounted inside the drivers' compartment, features three LED lights and a speaker. When the vehicle is shifted into reverse, a GREEN light indicates the unit is on and functioning. Flashing YELLOW lights and an intermittent beep indicate a person or object is within 9 feet of the rear of the vehicle. A FLASHING RED light and a more frequent beep indicate an obstacle is within 6 feet of the rear of the vehicle. A SOLID RED light and a continuous beep indicate the obstacle is within 3 feet. The detection range extends approximately 4 feet to either side of the sensor, 6 feet high and down to the ground. The system was designed as a driver aid to help compensate for driver error. It is not intended to replace established safety procedures used when a vehicle is in reverse, but it does give drivers the ability to detect obstacles that otherwise might go unseen, and the opportunity to stop the vehicle before running into an obstacle. MARYLAND TRANSPORTATION We have had the Guardian Alert Back up warning systems on Maryland Transportation Authority bucket trucks, vans, pickup trucks and dump trucks since November of 1999. There has not been a reported backing accident by any vehicle equipped with the Guardian System to date. Backing accidents had been an expensive and dangerous problem for the Authority, especially with the bucket trucks, prior to installation. We expect to equip additional vehicles with the Guardian System as they are purchased. Thanks for bringing the Guardian to our attention. Yours truly, Glen Niswonger ![]() Monterey Division 50 Ragsdale Dr., Suite 100, P.O. Box 951 - Monterey, CA 93942-0951
